Buying an E-Bike or E-Scooter in Switzerland: What to Consider

Before buying, three questions are worth asking: How far do you travel each day, do you take the vehicle on a train or in a car, and where can you charge it? For commuters who combine cycling with public transport, a folding E-Bike is the most flexible solution; for purely urban journeys, an E-Scooter; and for tours and trails, an E-Mountainbike. The service afterwards is just as important: TWHEELS stores batteries, chargers and spare parts in Switzerland and offers test rides by appointment.

Road Approval and Rules: What Applies in Switzerland

All E-Scooters and E-Bikes from TWHEELS are approved for road use in Switzerland. The most important rules at a glance (as of July 2026):

The following has also applied since the revision in July 2025: You must ride electric scooters without a seat alone and standing. The TWHEELS E-Bikes belong to the 25-km/h class: no licence plate, no helmet requirement, and no driving licence required from the age of 16.

  • E-Bike City Folding: folds in 30 seconds and offers up to 80 km of range. The choice for commuters travelling by train or with limited storage space.
  • E-Bike City Classic: classic frame, up to 80 km of range, for commuting and shopping.
  • E-Mountainbike: full suspension, 80 Nm mid-drive motor, and up to 100 km of range for tours and trails.
  • E-Scooter Lite: 450 W, up to 50 km of range, compact for the city.
  • E-Scooter Pro: 500 W, up to 100 km of range when the journey is longer.

Frequently asked questions

Are e-scooters allowed in Switzerland?
Yes. Road-legal e-scooters up to 20 km/h count as light motorised bicycles and may use cycle paths and roads, the pavement is off limits. All TWHEELS e-scooters are road-legal in Switzerland.
From what age can you ride an e-scooter in Switzerland?
From 14 with a category M driving licence, from 16 without a licence. The same rule applies to e-bikes with pedal assistance up to 25 km/h.
Is a helmet mandatory for an e-scooter or e-bike?
In Switzerland there is no helmet requirement for e-scooters and e-bikes up to 25 km/h, but a helmet is strongly recommended. Only fast e-bikes up to 45 km/h require one. You will find suitable helmets in the eMobility accessories.
Does an e-bike need a licence plate?
E-bikes up to 25 km/h need neither a licence plate nor a vignette. Only S-pedelecs up to 45 km/h require a yellow licence plate. All TWHEELS e-bikes belong to the 25 km/h class.
How far can I go on one battery charge?
The TWHEELS e-bikes manage up to 80 km, the e-mountain bike up to 100 km, the e-scooters 50 to 100 km. The real range depends on riding mode, weight, terrain and temperature.
Can I take a test ride before buying?
Yes. Just book an appointment, then you can try your preferred model on site and compare at your own pace before you decide.
My e-bike feels slow. What can I do?
Usually it is not a fault: first check the selected assistance mode, the tyre pressure and whether a brake is rubbing. These three points explain most cases. Otherwise TWHEELS support is happy to help.
