Sprinting Machine Training: Technique and Intervals
The Sprinting Machine runs without a motor: You set the pace, and the belt follows you. Accelerate at the front, maintain your pace in the middle, and slow down farther back. This makes the Curved Treadmill ideal for technique work, intervals, and sprints.
Here you’ll find six workouts, from getting to know the curved running surface for the first time to sprint training, including the most important technique points for a clean running style.

Technique basics on the curved treadmill

Technique basics on the curved treadmill
- Step on from the side, hold the frame for support and place your feet in the middle of the belt: that is the neutral zone.
- Start walking slowly with one hand on the handrail: the belt has no motor and responds instantly to every step.
- Stay tall, look ahead instead of down at your feet; short, quick steps landing on the midfoot under your body.
- Practise changing position: two or three steps forward into the curve speeds the belt up, moving back to the middle slows it down.
- Once your pace is steady, let go of the rail and repeat the transitions until getting on and off feels safe.

10-minute intro: walking and easy jogging

10-minute intro: walking and easy jogging
- Walk briskly for 2-3 min in the middle of the belt, upright posture, arms swinging loosely.
- Jog easily for 15-30 sec, moving half a step forward towards the curve.
- Go back to walking for 30-45 sec: drift back to the middle or slightly behind it.
- Repeat the switch 8-10 times; on a curved belt your calves and Achilles tendons need time to adapt.
- Finish with 1-2 min of easy walking.

15 minutes of easy steady running

15 minutes of easy steady running
- 2-3 min of walking and jogging to warm up.
- Move into an easy steady run and find your comfort spot just ahead of the middle of the belt.
- Run tall, shoulders relaxed, arms at 90 degrees, landing on the midfoot under your body.
- Control your pace through position: drifting back means one or two steps forward, too fast means easing back a touch.
- Finish the last 2 min walking.

Sprint intervals with long rests

Sprint intervals with long rests
- Warm up for 3-5 min: walking, jogging and 2-3 short pick-ups.
- For the sprint, move forward into the curve and hit full speed within 2-3 steps; with no motor there is no speed limit.
- Sprint all out for 10-15 sec: drive the knees up, pump the arms hard, upper body tall.
- To slow down, let yourself drift back to the middle of the belt under control, then walk easily for 60-90 sec until you are almost fully recovered.
- 6-8 reps, quality over quantity: as soon as the sprint clearly slows down, end the session.

20/40 HIIT

20/40 HIIT
- 3 min of walking and jogging to warm up.
- Every minute starts with 20 sec of fast running (about 80-90 per cent effort) in the front section of the belt.
- Then move back to the middle of the belt and walk easily for 40 sec; the clock sets the rhythm.
- Hold your form even when tired: tall, eyes ahead, short fast steps.
- Start with 8 rounds and build up to 12, then cool down with 2-3 min of walking.

Pyramid tempo runs

Pyramid tempo runs
- 3-5 min of walking and jogging to warm up.
- Run the efforts as a pyramid: 30, 45, 60, 45, 30 sec at a strong pace (about 80 per cent effort), positioned just ahead of the middle of the belt.
- After each step, walk easily for 60-120 sec in the rear third of the belt until your breathing settles.
- Run the peak (60 sec) with your pace under control: posture tall, step rate high.
- On the way back down, pick the pace up slightly, then cool down with 2-3 min of walking.
Ready-to-follow workouts
Start with a curated routine—2 to 3 sessions per week are enough to make noticeable progress.
Curved treadmill start
Progression over the first 2-3 weeks: first technique and position changes, then walking and jogging, finally the 15-min steady run. 2-3x per week.
- Technique basics on the curved treadmill · 5-10 min
- 10-minute intro: walking and easy jogging · 10-12 min, 2-3x per week
- 15 minutes of easy steady running · 15 min (roughly the same as 20 min on a motorised treadmill)
Sprint power, 15 min
Sprints, 20/40 HIIT and pyramids alternating week by week. Because the motorless belt takes around 30 percent more energy, 15 minutes replace much longer sessions. 1-2x per week with a rest day.
- Sprint intervals with long rests · 6-8 x 10-15 sec sprint, 60-90 sec walking rest each
- 20/40 HIIT · 8-12 rounds of 1 min (20 sec fast, 40 sec walking)
- Pyramid tempo runs · 30-45-60-45-30 sec at a strong pace, 60-120 sec walking rest each
